You can buy thick plastic from any car upholstery shop. Got some online for my Mazda mx5.
It was a fiddle to fit but looked as good as professional job:)

Try Screen Genie before replacing your screen, apparently it turns scratched & opaque/cloudy screens crystal clear with a good bit of elbow grease.
I've seen it on eBay and the reviews/comments look very positive.

YES - I bought a kit on ebay from the USA. THe window is standard and the same as the BMW, It should come with a zipper head, glue and needle and thread. Allow two hours. You need two people, one inside and one outside. (It could be a 30m job with experience). Take your time. Discuss each step.

Choose a warm dry day, use a garage, or move to Australia like us.

Have a good look at the window and trim fitting. Mark the original start and end zip positions on the inside of the hood to help your realignment,

The start is tricky releasing the clip retaining the zipper ends due to access and lack of light from the inside. I boldly cut a hole in the window so could access from the outside. After removing the clip, the window zips out easily.

Release pressure on the hood - open it as it ready for the motor.

Lining up the zips is the second tricky part to get the zipper head on. Once done the zipping process is fine. To help it chock the hood a a bit further - 14 inches?

The zipping was slow round the corners where it was tight. i used WD 40 to ease the zipper. BE careful - just on the plastic of the zip with a finger not near the perspex.

We found our efforts to complete the zipping opened up the zipper where we had started - we begun again more carefully and in 5 minutes had the window zipped in.

Then you need to sew across the zip ends with the thread and needle - two person job passing the needle in and out.

Then it is complete and you have to retrain your mind not use mirrors all the time.

I wish i could answer the question as ive just I just put a long cut in my megane 1999 rear window and need to get it replaced im near birmingham. The window has no zip and is sewn in. Anyone know of any trimmers that can do it for me.

You can DIY but it is fiddly and not easy to align the zip back in correctly. You also need the correct slider to engage the teeth properly otherwise it could unravel. I'm all for saving a few bob but I'm glad I got mine done properly (2001 model). I took it to Maidstone Trimming, they did it while I waited (& supplied refreshments).

Anybody do replacement windows in Edinburgh??

You can buy the plastic yourself from Maidstone trimmers for £19.99 and get an upholsterer to machine it into the zip section but it's not easy to get it out and even harder to put back in and my new plastic split when the roof folded down,so that was a waste of money. To avoid paying Renault fortunes there's another company on ebay called soft-tops charging £125 for 2 hrs work in Croydon 02086658321. I don't know them but they have good feedback. That's my next point of call.

Yes u can, but i reckon it would take time... A better way would be to take the car to a guy in Sandbach(Trimmtech) who'll supply and fit the window for £150

Depends where you are but if you are in the South East try Maidstone Trimming (07963 692222); they did mine while I waited for £150.00 (way cheaper that the Renault dealership) and very nice people too.

I have just had the rear plastic window replaced in my daughter's '96 Megane Cabriolet (kind Dad!) by STCS of Coventry. Top job at a very reasonable price and I also got the hood cleaned - fantastic! Well worth the 5 hour round trip and a chance to see the excellent Coventry Transport Museum while you wait. Usual disclaimers.

Jak, give yourself plenty time and have car in garage...remove old window and then attach new one with zipper off coat or something... might need to try a few different sizes.(we started where break is in zip, middle of top) The zip will look as if it is joining the teeth as slides along easily but the trick seems to be to join the teeth together with pliers as you go....pain staking I know but works...pull zip along as you go and it will stay closed. When done don't bother removing zip pull. My bro also used staple gun as he went to make sure zip stayed closed and then removed all staples at end....mine now looks factory fitted and completely waterproof..........

no you cant unzip the old one out and then zip a new one in as the window is sewn into the hood .As mine is completly ripped I have looked into it and the hood has to be removed to enable the window to be replaced, this takes about five hours to complete and can cost between 300 and 500 pounds. The hood on my magane is looking rather tatty so I might as well get the whole thing replaced and will appreciate any recomendations. Can anyone please tell me what the zip is actually for?

jan

did you us any special tools, or was it as easy as it sounds just zip it in, as I can't find a zip puller. Any tips please

huddy
April 2009
is it just cloudy, or is it ripped? we bought some plastic polish off ebay and an electric buffer/polisher from halfords and it's made the window pretty much transparent (it was pretty opaque before hand). Hand polishing just didn't work, it left the window looking ok but the fine scratches form the polishing caused streaking, but the buffer did the job in minutes.

Yes you can replace the plastic rear window yourself.
The new one is around £250 from your local Renault dealer.
Simply unzip the old one and zip in the new one.
