How can I fix my Ford Galaxy faulty electric windows?

I understand that this is a common problem with Mk1 Galaxys but can't find any clear advice on how to fix them! I can operate the passenger window from it's own switch but neither window from the driver's side switch - also the central locking doesn't work - even with the key i can only lock/unlock the car from the passenger side; using the key in the drivers door opens only the drivers door! Help!

anyone with water near the ecu under the passenger seat should check rear window washer. The pipe breaks under the carpet near the seat and every time you go to wash rear window it puts water in the area where ECU is.

Well worth the time reading. Large Brown wire broken in the door hinge rubber boot. I had tested at the switch and got voltage and swapped it over with another door switch. Recently bought a replacement motor as convinced that it was the problem but still in box so saved myself a good few quid today and only took half hour to fix.

We haver a ford Galaxy GLX estate 96 and could not close the driver side electric window, when the switch panel was pressed (for up & down) there could be heard a faint motor sound. Thanks to reading the above suggestion from a certain Keith;

'the proplem seems to be the wires inside the rubber sleeve which you can see when you open the door have broken this just screws out of the door post and replaced'

keith July 2010 ....

I promptly went outside, found I couldn't remove the rubber tube but could feel the wires inside so I basically pushed one way and the other and...bullseye! Pressed the switch and window went up!!!! Yeeeehaaaaw

I found out that the wires in the rubber gator in the door, is like a plug, the plug had some how disconneted it self and after a nightmare of trying to push and hold the plug from inside,( under the fuse box)I then had to push and hold it in the gap so that I can connect the other end of the plug coming from the door it self! into each other, then it started to work

I have the same problem on my 1995 Ford Galaxy, lighted the luses and caught and opened the door herself several times. Found that the ECU was very wet, I took, dried and cleaned, but now the automatic door lock does not work, only manual. My control key does not work. I tried a few ways to program the control ... but could not. Can anyone help me?!

For me it was the wire (large brown) in the gator broken. As John says, the connector is a pain. Soldering is the best option if you can, and heatshrink if possible. Even as an electronics engineer with no manual, this would have taken me hours to find. The info on this page has been priceless.

Me again, After drying out the module and fixing the water issue I have found the doors still do not work. I am sure you can hear the mechanisms working in the doors but nothing opens / locks. You can only lock the doors from the inside and then use the key to lock the drivers door to secure the car. I will try cleaning up the ecu as i removed the water from it hours after it happened so it could be salvaged. If I bought a new ecu would i have to get it programmed?

Hi Guys,

Some great advice on here which ill try to use when i get home.

My issue may be slightly different im not sure, in the horriffic rain we've been having our galaxy flodded itself, water came from the windscreen guttering and flodded the ecu compartment. when this happened the doors were locking and unlocking on their own untill the battery was disconnected. i got out all the water asap and then the problem went away. now a few days later the doors and boot dont lock and unlock unless you do it manually form inside the car. the drivers opens and closes but the others do not.
any ideas? ill try the looming in the door but im just puzzled why they all have gone at the same time?

I hope someone can help!!

I fixed my water leak by taking out the cover in the engine bay the one infront of the pollon filter. It runs the width of the car. Then poke a piece of plastic pipe 6m/m dia. down the corner and you will see the water run out in the wheel arch. job done. I will now go and check my windows ..????

Shorty i had same problem with my ecu situated under passenger seat (water) i found the leak comes from the windscreen it runs down the windscreen strut into the footwell and then into where the ecu is.i just got some windscreen sealant and resealed windscreen raised the ecu as you have done, but also drilled about 6,8mm holes in the area so any water does go in there again it just drains straight out

wow, exactly the same thing happened with my Alhambra, checked the wiring as Paul's response and the red/yellow wire broken. Crimped it together and it worked fine.
Sprayed the multi-plug with WD40 and it went in easily.
Lovely fix, thank you

I've had the same thing and Paul's response is right on the button. However, in my case although I managed to disassemble the multi plug that goes through the door pillar, all the wires were connected OK on the back of the plug. It was only a bit of good luck that made me check back further along the loom that goes into the door and lo and behold not only the big thick red-yellow wire but also a thin brown one was broken. They seem a bit hard to solder, so I crimped them and insulated them in the end.

Bit of a note as well. The multi-pin connector is an ABSOLUTE PAIN to get back in and the door pillar side seems prone to pushing back into the body. You need to make sure that you get the red/black rubber ring tightly into place holding the socket in place first, then get a helper to swing the door in slightly and hold it while you get the plug lined up. (it won't go back with the door fully open).

You feel the first click as the pins settle then you have to get a screwdriver to push the outer castellated ring clockwise which draws the 2 halves of the socket/plug together. Sounds simple when I write it here but took me a bad hour to figure how it all dissembles etc etc.

Make sure you know the person holding the door very well .... if they slip or let go of the door you're gong to missing some fingers :-)

There is a red/yellow wire broken between the drivers door and the car in the rubber tube, you need to solder a new wire onto the pin that goes through the plug in the door piller.not a very nice job i know i done it.paul

Hi if you lift the cover under the passenger seat you will see the ECU for the central locking if the compartment is full of water there is a fair chance the ECU is scrap. If this is the case there is a guy on ebay selling instructions on how to fix problem (about a £10). I done mod took about 30 mins but worked. Its not that difficult if you follow the instrucions and and can join a few wires together following his diagramme. Still have not fixed water leak ECU now is raised off the floor.
